Wigginton Grasshoppers U9's Play in the York & District FA sanctioned Mitchell League. This league is a Fair Play League, where no results are kept up to Christmas and enjoyment of the game of football is paramount. The squad has a maximum of twenty one, and is a mix of boys and girls, and abilities. The team of coaches, Stu Wood, Simon Ward and Rudie Humphrey (FA Level 1), under manager Debbie Doughty endeavour to make coaching sessions a fun way to learn.
Sessions are broken into four parts, and work to the FA 'four corner' principal, covering Technique, Physical, Psychological and Social aspects of the beautiful game. Each session aims to run as follows: 1. Warm Up - this normally involves a 'game' such as foxes tails and is designed to get the heart rate up and get a sweat on! 2. Skills Session - this comprises of working around game situation play, improving passing, perfecting deadly finishing, positional sense or similar. This is done through drills and small sided games. 3. Match - without doubt the most popular part of any training, replicating our match days, complete with free kicks, corners and goal mouth action! 4. Warm Down - the chance to cool down, reduce the blood flow and chat through what we have learnt during the session.
Matches are played on Sunday mornings, wit occasional friendlies on Saturdays, and the team aim to end the season with entry in a number of tournaments. Throughout the season Debbie and her team of coaches aim to organise some extra events, trips to watch York City, special sessions such as the FA Skills team coming to training, acting as Ball Boys/Girls at Doncaster Rovers, training with Hull City FC, watching the England U21's and end of seasons awards etc etc. See the news section for more details. The coaches also produce a series of newsletters throughout the season.
